Rav Moshe Shternbuch: When The Only Minyan For Mincha Is After Shkia
Many people are Makpid to daven Mincha before Shkia.  Chasidim often daven Mincha after Shkia.  What should you do if you always daven before Shkia and the only Minyan where you are, is after Shkia?  Should you daven with them after Shkia or daven B'Yechidus?

Rav Moshe Shternbuch says (1:85) that the Vilna Gaon held that if you daven Mincha after Shkia you are not yotzei even B'Di'eved.  However the Rema, the Shaagas Aryeh, and the Pri Megadim all pasken that you can daven after Shkia even L'Chatchila.  Others hold that you should daven before Shkia but are yotzei B'Di'Eved even afterwards.  The Mishna Brura (OC 233) says that you can daven up to 15 minutes after Shkia.

Rav Moshe Shternbuch says that he heard from Rav Shmuel Yosef Rabinov that if you always daven before Shkia and come to a place where the only minyan is afterwards, on that day you may daven without a minyan before Shkia.  However if you live in a place where the only minyan is after Shkia, you cannot daven B'Yechidus everyday.  You must daven after Shkia with a minyan, unless you are Makpid to keep all the minhagim of the Gra in which case you can daven everyday B'Yechidus.  Even in this case you should make sure to go to Shul to hear Chazaras HaShatz, Kadish, and Kedusha.

Important Note: We try to convey the Tshuva to the best of our ability. We admit that our understanding may not be accurate. Please also understand that this Tshuva may not be the final word on this topic. One should consult a Rav before drawing any conclusions.
