Tehilim Perek 139: Hashem Is Here, Hashem Is There
"Im Esak Shamayim Sham Ata V'Atzia She'ol Hineka", If I ascend up to heaven, you are there. If I make my bed in the depths of She'ol, behold, you are here (Tehilim 139:8). Simply put this means there is no escape from Hashem. Neither in the heavens above nor in the depths below.
The Meforshim point to the difference between the word "Sham" which means "there" and "Hineka" which means "here". If a person's spirit tells him he is soaring he should know Hashem is not there, He is further away. Hashem does not dwell among the haughty. But if a person's spirit is humble and down in the depths of humility then Hashem is Hineka, right alongside you.
Another pshat is that if a person truly lifts himself to great heights he can never reach Hashem. There is always further to go. Just like a parent holding a candy just beyond the outstretched hands of a child learning to walk, Hashem always places himself just in the distance so that we strive to catch him and keep raising ourselves. But when we sink to the depth Hashem does no such thing. He comes down all the way to us to lift us up. During our worst times we can take solace that Hashem is right there with us.
